The history of the quartz watch is relatively young. The first quartz clock was built in 1927 by Warren Marrison and J.W. Horton. Many people don’t know that the clock was invented in Bell Telephone Laboratories. Therefore the inventor of the telephone was also indirectly associated with the invention of the quartz clock.

Jacques and Pierre Curie also had a big influence on the quartz clock technology as well. They were credited with discovering the piezoelectric properties that quartz had. This discovery led to the first experiments with quartz as a timekeeping device. This led to the first crystal oscillator being developed by Walter Cady, which led to the invention of the clock itself. While quartz clocks had been in use since then, the first quartz wristwatch wasn’t developed until 1969 by Seiko. Since then the technology has really taken off with a lot of success. Many people want a quartz watch and won’t settle for anything else.

Since then, there have been advances in the quartz watch field. They now have light-powered and motion powered quartz watches. Light powered actually converts the sun’s energy into electricity which powers the watch. Motion-powered converts kinetic energy into electricity.
